Dorothy Gale

A cyclone lifts a Kansas farmhouse clean off its foundation — with a girl and her dog still inside it — and sets it down somewhere that is not Kansas at all. The landing kills somebody, and the little people who arrive to thank her for it press a pair of magic silver shoes onto her feet and point her down a road made of yellow brick. In a cornfield she finds a talking scarecrow stuck on a pole, sick to death of talking to crows, and cuts him free. And somewhere in the dark of a forest, something is groaning that neither of them can explain — not yet.
